In view of involving students in the cultural activities organized by the University of Alicante, during the 2006-2007 academic year we launched the Cultural Volunteering Programme. The purpose of this programme is to provide students with the opportunity of experiencing from within the various facets of a socio-cultural project. Students will receive performance invitations as well as free-elective credits.
The first step is formative. The participants in the programme are introduced to the various concepts of cultural management during sessions taught by top-class cultural activists, such as Toni Puig who works for the City Hall in Barcelona. The second step is more practical in nature, and it consists of taking part in various cultural activities, such as Mostrari - the European Documentary Film Festival, domingos culturales (cultural Sundays), thematic weeks like the Erotic Week, the Reading Week as well as film cycles.
First, the participants will have to state their interest areas. We will then try to ensure their participation in related events. For instance, the volunteers who took part in last year's edition of Mostrari performed public relation activities in the context of an interesting and rewarding event that counted with the participation of university filmmakers from all over Europe.
The Secretariat for Culture issues an official certificate with the respective credits depending on the number of hours of collaboration, but what actually counts is the experience gained at a personal and cultural level, the fact that you have enjoyed a given activity from a different perspective. In terms of credits, the collaboration extends throughout the entire academic year, but there is no actual time limit to it, and you can also change your work area.
